New iphone app adds incentives to go to the gym

SAN FRANCISCO: If a bulging waistline isn't enough of a motivator to go to the gym, a new iPhone app adds a financial incentive to provide that extra nudge.

The app called GymPact charges users a fee for every gym commitment they skip. The fee can range from $5 to $50 dollars.

"We decided to motivate people by having money on the line, rather than giving them money, which is a very radical departure from other motivational apps and programs," explained Yifan Zhang, GymPact's co-founder and CEO.

After providing a credit card, GymPact's users make a commitment for the number of times each week they will go to the gym, along with the financial penalty they will incur if they don't.

At the end of the week, the company charges users who did not meet their goals. The money collected is distributed to users who kept their commitments. People who committed to more days get a bigger portion of the pooled money.

"We really think of what you have on the line as the number of days you're committing. That's really the focus of the program - how many days can we get you to go to the gym every week," Zhang said.

The company is paying out anywhere between 50 cents $1 for each workout and keeps about 30 per cent of each payout.

Last week, each workout was worth 73 cents. To validate the time spent at the gym, users must check-in at a venue for 30 minutes for the workout to count.

Zhang developed the app from research into behavioral economics while at Harvard University, where she was investigating the relationship between financial incentives and motivation.

"One of the key concepts is loss aversion. Say you take the same amount of money and you offer it as a reward, or use it as a penalty. People are much more motivated by a loss than by gain," she explained, adding that users make it to the gym 90 per cent of the time.

The Nissan Scratch Shield iPhone case features the brand’s pioneering self-healing paint finish, a world first in paint technology developed in 2005 and already used on a number of Nissan and Infiniti models.

The case has three key benefits: the highly flexible and elastic properties of Scratch Shield paint technology allows fine scratches to quickly mend themselves**; its tactile gel-like rather than glossy surface is more scratch-resistant than conventional paint and provides a better grip; and the case itself is made of ABS plastic – a high grade substance widely used in the automotive industry which is more rigid and robust than other plastics. The outer ‘paint’ is made from polyrotaxane, which means that when damage occurs to the coating in the form of a fine scratch, the chemical structure is able to react to change back to its original shape and fill the gap – ‘healing’ the blemish.

An initial batch of prototypes of the innovative Scratch Shield iPhone cases has been produced by Nissan for BETA testing with selected journalists and customers, but if demand proves strong, it will look to put the cases on general sale later this year.

Nissan has been licensing its unique technologies for various non-automotive applications since 2004. Other technologies that have been licensed include its Miniature Thermal Imaging Sensor: initially designed to make driving at night safer by detecting the presence of people even in places not illuminated by the car’s headlights; the technology has been licensed to create a device which allows customers to monitor heat generation, or collect temperature readings via infrared sensor. Nissan will continue to research and develop breakthrough technologies that can benefit other industries, and promote these non-automotive applications globally.

Nissan has long been an innovator when it comes to advancements in the automotive world, heralding the start of a remarkable new era in motoring when it launched the first Crossover, the Nissan Murano, followed by the hugely-successful Qashqai and recently joined by the Juke – with its innovative fusion of compact SUV and sports car styling. Soul Calibur coming to iPhone January 19th

If you love fighting games, then chances are you have probably played Namco Bandai’s Soul Calibur series either on your gaming console or at the arcade. Well the good news for iPhone owners out there is that Namco Bandai is apparently porting the game over onto iOS come January 19th. According to the report, the iOS version of the game will feature all 19 fighters and several different modes. These include arcade battle, time attack, survival, extra survival, practice and museum modes.

In fact for those of you out there who are particularly competitive, time attack, survival and extra survival modes are apparently compatible with Apple’s Game Center Leader Boards. The game will be compatible with the iPhone, iPod touch and the iPad. Unfortunately there is no word on pricing just yet, but if Namco Bandai sticks to the same pricing scheme that they have for their other games, we don’t expect Soul Calibur to be overly expensive. Fans of the series or arcade-style fighting games will probably want to mark this down on their calendars.

Bank customers seeking to switch money to other people’s accounts should soon be able to do so using only the recipient’s mobile phone number as the industry shifts towards a system that would simplify transfers radically.

The Payments Council – which is tasked with speeding up UK payments – is pursuing plans that would make it easier and faster for individuals and businesses to transfer money using their mobile phones.

After months of discussions with the industry it is expected to announce in February detailed plans for a database that would link bank customers’ mobile phone numbers to their accounts. That would allow people to transfer money to their contacts’ mobile numbers – via text message or an “app” on their handset – rather than needing to know their full account details.

The council will provide details about how expensive the system would be to set up and how long it would take to implement. It has previously suggested that such a service could be introduced within about two years.

The initiative takes place as banks scramble to catch up with online heavyweights such as Google and Paypal, which have started to launch their own mobile payment services.

To date these have centred on enabling people to pay for goods more quickly by using a mobile handset equipped with a chip that communicates wirelessly with retailers’ tills.

Analysts say banks have been slow to invest in the area of mobile payments and broader digital banking services, largely because they have had been so focused on cleaning up their balance sheets after the financial crisis.

However research suggests they may be missing out on a lucrative revenue-stream as bank customers would be willing to pay for certain digital services.

A report today by PwC finds that most consumers would be willing to pay up to £10 a month for services such as information alerts, social media notifications and a kind of “electronic wallet” that stored loyalty card points from retailers.

To charge for such services could provide the first step for banks to shift away from the controversial model of “free” banking.

Banks want to end this opaque format, whereby they extract revenue by penalty fees rather than upfront monthly charges. But customers are generally resistant to paying for basic banking.

Virgin Money, which recently acquired Northern Rock, raised eyebrows when it said it would charge for most of its current accounts when it launches them next year.

However, Matt Hobbs, retail and commercial banking partner at PwC, said there was a growing propensity among consumers to pay for additional services that would help them to manage their financial affairs.

“The mindset needs to change,” he said. “Banks need to focus on innovation and customer service rather than [on] products and sales.”

Analyst: Apple to release redesigned iPhone 5 in summer, just one iPad in 2012

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, in a note to investors, has laid out his predictions for Apple's calendar year 2012. In it he expects a redesigned iPhone 5 to be released in midsummer and only one version of the iPad 3, despite other rumors that Apple could release an expanded lineup of iPad models.

Munster's note, reported by AppleInsider, suggests that Apple's "base case" scenario will see it selling 142 million iPhone units through 2013, which represents an 18 percent increase in revenue from the previous year. In a "bull case" scenario Apple could sell as many as 162 million units, bumping the revenue increase to 35 percent.

With Munster predicting only a single iPad model for 2012, his total revenue prediction for Apple remains conservative at 14 percent. However, many rumors have been circulating that Apple could release any number of iPad models, expanding its lineup considerably.

Should Apple release a 7-inch iPad or an iPad 2S, Munster's predictions could prove to be extremely low.

So what should we make of this? First of all, this is merely a prediction. It is entirely possible that Munster has an inside track on some production plans, but more than likely it's just his best, educated guess.

It remains to be seen whether Apple's delay on releasing the iPhone 4S until fall was a calculated shift in production scheduling or simply a product management decision that resulted in a later release date. I would put my money on the former and not expect an update to the iPhone lineup until next fall.

As for the iPad rumors, I'm with Munster (which is fun to say out loud by the way). While Apple could very well release an iPad 2S alongside an iPad 3, I think it is much more likely to remain on its current trajectory of a single model upgrade. It seems as though the Retina Display will certainly make its debut on the iPad this spring, but I doubt Apple is looking to have multiple models or sizes to choose from.

While I do not profess to be a financial analyst by any stretch, Apple has a habit of crushing earnings estimates (especially conservative ones), so if you've been considering putting some money on Apple, now's as good a time as any I would think.

For a number of observers, these are mainly predictions made by Munster on the possible new design of the iPhone 5. However there may be the possibility that Munster may have some knowledge about the plans of the company for the iPhone 5 although observers have indicated that it may be nothing more than an educated guess.

Some observers have also indicated that the recent release of the iPhone 4S last fall was likely a shift in the production schedule of the company and it will be very much possible for the company to release the iPhone 5 at around the same period in the coming year.

In connection to the iPad, some observers agree with the prediction of Munster that the company will release only one model of the device since it is doubtful that Apple will release different size options for the device which may feature the Retina Display. In the end, the release schedule of the iPhone 5 and the possibility of only one iPad remains uncertain until the devices are finally released into the market.

The iLuv Overlay is a translucent hard plastic shell case for the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. The case only comes in three colors, but they tastefully let the back of the iPhone 4/4S show through. The Overlay fits the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S perfectly, and has cutouts for all ports and buttons on the phone.

Design

The iLuv Overlay translucent hardshell case is a form fitting, minimalistic case. It covers the back and two vertical sides of the iPhone 4S as well as four corners. The hard plastic case has soft touch coating on both exterior and interior, and it feels nice in hand and gives the case a better grip. It's easy to put it on or take it off: just slide one side of the phone into the case and push the other side in.

There are currently three color options in the Overlay series, white, black and pink. The white version matches the white iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S very nicely, giving the milky solid white phone a translucent frost like look. It's not completely clear, just translucent enough to let the Apple logo and iPhone branding show through. The case is slim but has some thickness, and it can certainly protect the phone from scratches, nicks and bumps on the back and sides when you carry it in a backpack or purse. The case doesn't cover the display nor does it come with a film protector.

Features

The bottom cutout leaves the 30-pin connector, speaker and bottom mic open; and the top cutout leaves the power button, top mic and audio jack open. The iLuv Overlay case has a long side cutout that gives you plenty of room to use the silence button and volume buttons, and it works with all versions of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S.

The Overlay translucent case has a nice rear cutout for the camera and flash, giving both plenty of room to operate. The case has a nice wrap around on the vertical sides and corners to keep the display off a table when you put it face down and add more structural support should you drop the phone.

Conclusion

If you want to let the beauty of your iPhone 4S shine through, you should look at the iLuv Overlay case. The white case matches the white iPhone 4S well with a frosty look, the black version works with the black iPhone 4S well, and the pink version is eye-catching. According to TechCrunch, Apple is in talks to purchase Israeli Flash chip maker Anobit for between $400 and $500 million. The TechCrunch post cites Israeli Calcalist as having the original scoop, but also makes note that there may already be an Anobit Flash chip inside the iPhone 4S.

What’s the big deal with Anobit and the iPhone 5?

For starters, many Apple enthusiasts were left in the dark when Apple rolled out the iPhone 4s instead of the iPhone 5 that they were expecting. Popular consensus was that Apple was using the iPhone 4S as the opportunity to work out the kinks in Siri, the voice-response artificial intelligence app, before taking the beta tag off of it.

Is Apple delaying the iPhone 5 until they get a fully-integrated Flash chip installed?

If TechCrunch is on with their rationale, what Apple is really interested in is the MSP powered MSP20xx embedded flash controllers, which can improve memory on both smartphones and on tablets.

Samsung is preparing to take things up a notch in 2012, having revealed its plans to release a 2GHz dual-core processor within the next year.

Speaking to Korean website Duam, an anonymous “high flyer” at Samsung has reportedly revealed the company’s plans to release a 2GHz dual-core Exynos CPU in 2012. The unnamed executive told the site that Samsung will “release a 2Ghz dual core CPU-equipped smartphone by next year” and that it “will have the data processing capacities of a regular PC”, which now arrive equipped with between 3 and 4 gigahertz of power.

While Samsung’s home-grown processor will no doubt be making an appearance on its 2012 flagship (the Galaxy S III?), the company also plans to manufacturer the chips for other phone makers. So, it looks like next year could be the year of the 2GHz dual-core smartphone, then.

The 2GHz dual-core Exynos CPU is reportedly still in development by Samsung, and its exact availability is still to be confirmed.

If the Galaxy S2 struggles to quench your inner speedster, Samsung plans to ramp things up with a 2GHz dual-core superphone in 2012.

Search provider Daum quotes an unnamed “high-ranking” executive within the Korean company, who lets slip that Samsung plans to “release a 2Ghz dual core CPU-equipped smartphone by next year” that “will have the data processing capacities of a regular PC.”

Although it has been argued that building a 4GHz single-core processor would be cheaper to manufacturer, Samsung has opted to build a dual-core processor which it believes is better optimised for smartphone devices.

While this will no doubt equip Samsung-branded smartphones with faster multitasking and whizzy apps, the company also plans to sell the CPUs, which will be launched under Samsung’s Exynos brand, separately to other phone makers. Still, The 2GHz dual-core chip is still in development by Samsung, with an exact release date still to be announced.

In the mean time, we’ll just have to “make do” with the Samsung Galaxy S II, which packs a duo of 1.2GHz chips under the hood. Apple iPad 3 production begins ahead of Q1 2012 release

The Apple iPad 3 has entered production ahead of the its release in Q1 2012, industry analyst Jeff Fidacaro is claiming.

Speaking to AllThingsD, the Susquehanna Financial analyst let-slip that third-gen iPad device has entered production in China, with Apple ramping up its Q4 iPad builds to between 12 and 14 million – from between 11 million and 13 million.

“Since our last month supply chain checks we are now seeing 600,000 to one million iPad 3 builds showing up on the plan for the fourth quarter of calendar 2011, ” said Fidacaro. “Our previous estimate did not include any iPad 3s.”

So, what can we expect from the so-called iPad 3? Many are expecting Apple‘s next-gen tablet to sport a revamped form-factor, housing a 9.7-inch (2048 x 1536) Retina Display. There’s also whispers of a dual-core A6 processor, and it’ll no doubt land running iOS 5.

The slate’s official release date is still to be confirmed, although it’s expected to hit shelves in March 2012.

Nokia to Release Windows Tablet in 2012

Nokia plans to launch a Windows tablet next summer, as the handset maker banks on the newest iteration of Microsoft's OS to revive its struggling brand.

"In June 2012, we will have a tablet that runs on Windows 8," Paul Amsellem, Nokia France head, told French newspaper Les Echos.

His remarks were not the first time the Finnish phone maker has mentioned a possible foray into the tablet market. Last month, CEO Stephen Elop told interviewers the company's Windows phones are just one small example of planned Nokia products featuring Microsoft's interface and operating system.

Nokia is still one of the world's largest cell phone makers, mostly due to its numerous low-end feature phones. However, as the iPhone and high-end Android handsets grabbed customers over the past few years, Nokia's position in the market has steadily dropped.

Nokia's new line of smartphones, Lumia, was unveiled in Europe this month, but won't be available in the U.S. until next year. These represent the first Nokia products running the Windows OS, and Nokia is likely relying on them to help regain some cell phone market share.

Nokis is also eyeing the increasingly hot tablet market to revitalize its brand. If the company indeed launches a Windows 8 tablet next year, it is expected to go head-to-head against the iPad and Android tablets such as the Kindle Fire and the Nook, as well as other Windows tablets, including possible offerings from Hewlett-Packard and Dell.

The iPad is currently the dominant tablet, but Android models from companies like Amazon and Barnes & Noble are starting to draw in consumers with lower-priced models that may appeal to people looking to use a tablet mostly for reading magazines and books. As competing tablet makers fight for position, Nokia will likely define its own appeal. If the company can offer tablets to PC users who are longstanding Windows customers, it may open its own spot in the crowded field.

Nokia's Windows 8 tablet is still in the rumor stage, with company spokespeople rushing to say the company has no specific plans to unveil such a device. All eyes will likely be on the Finnish company next year, waiting for a more definitive announcement.

Apple iPhone 5 and iPad 3 set for 2012 releases?

Apple fans might wish to prepare to sell their mobiles in 2012 to make way for either the new iPhone 5 or the iPad 3, if one source is to be believed.

The Japanese blog Macotakara, quoting a Nikkei Business article, has suggested releases of both of the highly-anticipated models are likely next year, reported 9to5 Mac.

Should the iPhone 5 be brought to the market, it is believed it will offer a 4G connection.

Apple may be planning to continue its tradition of leaving approximately a year between releases of iPhones, with the 4S model hitting the shelves two months ago, possibly making a further launch next autumn a likely option.

The news source noted that there were rumours of an imminent release, but Apple has downplayed these due to some concerns over the mobile's power consumption.

Cell phones soon will produce more-nuanced vibrations

November 15th, 2011 - Cell-phone addicts can be so attuned to their digital companions that they are able to feel the difference between a short vibration –signaling, say, a text message - and a longer one for a phone call.

Starting next year, they will have a new class of vibrations to get familiar with.

Apple, for example, began letting iPhone users with the latest version of its software assign customized vibrations to different contacts.

Other smartphone makers are preparing to deploy the latest hardware technology from Immersion, a San Jose, California, company that researches and licenses electronic vibration tools, company vice-president Dennis Sheehan said in an interview at a conference here.

Source: Companies that currently use Immersion's tech in their products include LG Electronics, Nokia and Samsung. Microsoft and Sony, since settling their lawsuits over the vibration tech used in video-game controllers, are now Immersion licensees, too.

Sheehan declined to say which companies would be the first to use the new sensor, but he said it would come to mobile phones first.

The field of vibration in electronics that Immersion specializes in is called haptic. With Immersion's recent haptic breakthrough, phones can produce taps, some types of rolling movements and vibrations in various strengths, depending on the software developer's preference.

"You can communicate more information using haptics," Sheehan said. As a utility, an app can give subtle clues about scrolling through menus allowing the user to tap away on a touchscreen without looking down.

Having more nuanced vibrations in phones can be positioned as an advantage over competitors' devices, Sheehan said. In many cases, basic aesthetics, processor speed and random-access memory specifications are no longer the deciding factor for someone looking to buy a new phone.

"The differentiation is not in the industrial design," he said. "They're all black rectangles."

The sensor Immersion has designed and is promoting to partners is called piezoelectric. Apple's iPhone 4 and Samsung's Galaxy phones use a vibrating motor called a linear-resonant actuator, Sheehan said. Nokia typically uses an eccentric-rotating mass, he said. The piezoelectric, which is a type of ceramic, is different because it applies an electric-field jolt that bends a mechanism to facilitate various types of vibrations.

For a glimpse at where this might come into play, Apple's experiment with assigning custom vibrations, instead of ringtones, to contacts is worth testing out. Users can tap a sequence on the touchscreen to be executed when a friend calls. Apple offers some samples of its own, such as S.O.S. and the slightly creepy heartbeat.

One in Four U.S. Cell Phones Is a Samsung

Americans loved their Android-based Samsung phones last quarter, based on comScore MobiLens data captured between April and June.

Samsung led phone manufacturers with 25.3 percent of the cell phone market (which includes feature phones), followed closely by LG (20.9 percent), Motorola (15.8 percent), RIM (8.4 percent), and Apple (7.9 percent). However, iPhone adoption grew the most among the manufacturers, rising 1 percent, even though Apple missed its usual June iPhone launch and is rumored to be announcing a next-generation iPhone in September or October.

Motorola lost the most interest last quarter, with subscriber figures falling 1.3 percent, but its fortunes could change with the imminent release of the dual-core, 4G-ready Motorola Droid Bionic .

As for mobile platforms, Google Android was both the most popular (40.1 percent) and the fastest growing (up 5.4 percent). Runner-up Apple iOS was found in 26.6 percent of all smartphones, up 1.1 percent from the previous quarter.

The number of smartphones running RIM's BlackBerry, Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 and Mobile, and Nokia's Symbian OS fell last quarter. RIM, the third-largest platform by volume, suffered the biggest drop, falling 3.7 percent to capture 23.4 percent of the market. Microsoft devices lost 1.7 percent of its subscribers to take 5.8 percent of the pie, while Nokia's Symbian platform fell 0.3 percent and was visible on only 2 percent of all U.S. smartphones. In June, Samsung launched the Samsung Exhibit 4G and Samsung Gravity SMART, though its Galaxy range continues to be its bread and butter. LG launched the Thrill 4G, a glasses-free 3D smartphone, and the LG 200 on Virgin Mobile.

ComScore's June results don't vary much from data reported in early July, but things could change by the end of the year. Phone manufacturers have announced the release of new devices shipping with revamped mobile operating systems, notably Nokia's first Windows phone and other phones equipped with Windows Phone 7.5, or "Mango." This week RIM launched two smartphones with the new BlackBerry 7 OS. Apple is also expected to launch a next-generation iPhone when it releases iOS 5 this fall. Survey: Third of Americans Rather Have Phones Than Sex

14 Aug 2011 - If given a choice between sex and their mobile phones for a week, many Americans would rather keep the phone.

That is among findings of a survey commissioned by mobile GPS company TeleNav Inc. The survey finds smartphone users, especially iPhone users, are the most attached to their phones.

The Huffington Post reported that TeleNav surveyed more than 500 American adults to track how attached they are to their phones. They were asked if they would rather give up their phones versus a number of other things for a week.

About 33 percent would rather give up sex, compared to 22 percent who would rather not use a toothbrush, 55 percent who would give up caffeine, and 74 percent who would give up alcohol.

A TeleNav press release stated that 70 percent of those willing to forgo sex were women.

Partners of BlackBerry users may want to be the most concerned. The survey stated that 23 percent of BlackBerry users responding stated they would rather go a week without seeing their significant other than go without their phone. Android users followed close behind with 21 percent compared to 18 percent for iPhone users.

That bodes well for the 83 percent of iPhone users who thought other iPhone users would make the best romantic partners. Taking a bite out of that is the finding that 40 percent of iPhone users would rather give up a toothbrush than their phone for a week.

Another "love story" shared by TeleNav is that 66 percent of smartphone users said they sleep with their phone next to them.

For those looking for a partner with manners they may want to steer towards a feature phone users. About 31 percent of smartphone users said they check their phone for messages or email while at the movies compared to 7 percent of feature phone users.

Also 18 percent of smartphone users had ended a relationship using technology such as voice mail, text messages, email, Facebook update or Twitter post compared to 7 percent of feature phone users.

Another finding, shared by Mashable , shows that 26 percent of smartphone users frequently check their phone at the dinner table compared to 6 percent of feature phone users.

When broken down by smartphone type that number jumps to more than a third for iPhone users compared to 21 percent of Android users and 15 percent of BlackBerry users.

The Best 4G Cell Phones, 4G Speeds and Upcoming Phones for 2011: What You Need to Know

What are the best 4G cell phones currently on the market? How do 4G speeds stack up by carrier? To answer these questions, we sat down with Senior Editor Molly McLaughlin of ConsumerSearch.com.

Kristina Tsamis: Some of the most talked-about 4G phones currently on the market are the HTC EVO, the Samsung Galaxy S and the Motorola Atrix. What are your favorite 4G cell phones? Maybe we can start with Sprint’s offerings?

Molly McLaughlin: The HTC EVO 4G and the Samsung Epic 4G are great Sprint phones in general but the only issue is that 4G is not always available. Experts say that when you are in a good 4G zone it works very well and you get pretty good speed, but speeds are still not as fast as promised.

One interesting note is that right now 4G is quite a battery drain so it’s a good idea if you don’t need super speed or are not using data to go back to 3G and that will give you better battery life. Another issue is that Sprint charges an extra 10 dollars per month for a 4G phone even if you are not in a 4G area. This is something to watch out for because even if Sprint has the most available coverage, it still is what it is across the country.

KT: How about the other networks? AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile?

MM: AT&T’s Motorola Atrix 4G made a big splash this year because it can dock into a laptop. As for the phone itself—again great hardware but the speed is just not there.

Verizon has a bunch of exciting-looking phones but none of them are actually out yet. The HTC Thunderbolt is due out sometime this month but it has been delayed several times. It’s possible it will be out mid-month but this is not definite.

T-Mobile is using a technology called HSPA+. What’s nice is that it’s backwards-compatible with a lot of phones. So if you already are a T-Mobile customer your phone may be able to take advantage of a faster network. T-Mobile’s big offerings right now are the myTouch 4G and the G2—both of which are Android phones. They get pretty decent speeds comparable to what is promised by T-Mobile. They may not be the fastest phones out there, but they live up to their promises.

KT: You mentioned that you’ve found 4G speeds to be underwhelming. Why do you think this is the case, even in areas with good 4G coverage?

MM: Yes, the tests that we’ve looked at were mainly on the East Coast and the West Coast and that’s where all the 4G networks are concentrating—in particular on the East Coast. The problem is that the promised 4G speeds are mostly theoretical and “best case scenario.” I think that sometimes the hardware can’t keep up and if you don’t have a good processor or enough memory then your phone won’t be able to keep up with theoretical speeds. 4G networks are still in their infancy, but I think the hardware needs more time to catch up and manufacturers need to do further testing to see what they need to improve in order to provide true 4G speeds.

How to ease into Google Voice: Freeze your cell phone service

10 March, 2011 - You can listen to Google Voice messages from your smartphone, can dial out using your Google number on an Android phone, and can finally port your own cell phone number to Google Voice. But if you're not quite ready to cut the cord with your carrier, you don't have to.

Google Voice has a vast number of benefits, from managing voice mail in an inbox to placing free texts. However, there still are some flaws--barely legible voice transcription and mobile app SMS delays to name two (I know, I know, not everyone experiences the same issues)--and the way I use it for work, it frustrates my friends). I'm also hesitant to leave the reliability of my monthly cell phone service and my special rate.

The middle path
There is, however, a third way, one that lets you ease into Google Voice--or ease out of your monthly service--before completely ditching your carrier plan. I discovered it accidentally when calling T-Mobile to cancel a service I now rarely use. I was adamant about canceling service, until the tenacious customer service rep offered me this: temporarily suspending my plan for a nominal, $10-per-month holding fee while I decided what to do. (If you already knew about this, good for you.)

As it turns out, T-Mobile will hold a phone number and rate plan for six months. In my case, the T-Mobile rep said, suspending my plan will also count toward my contractual obligation, a cheap way for me to pay out the remainder of my agreement without handing over a stiff early termination fee.

This isn't always the case, I found out--your expiration date may or may not move depending on a number of factors that the T-Mobile rep did not disclose, so you'll need to check with your carrier to see if you can dodge a termination fee should you bail before time's up.

T-Mobile isn't alone in this provision. Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint also offer temporary plan suspension.

You're suspended!
Verizon will suspend a phone line without billing for up to 180 days--as long as you're all paid up. That means you can pick up on your plan where you left off, including the contract termination date. It's ideal for long vacations. You can also suspend with billing, which will work toward the end-of-contract date.

Sprint will extend a Seasonal Standby mode for customers who have been paying their plan for a minimum of three months. You pay $8.99 per month for up to six consecutive months. You can't string these back-to-back, you'll need to wait another three months before asking to get back on. This will not advance your contract termination date, meaning you'll still have to fulfill the remainder of your contract to avoid the early termination fee (ETF).

AT&T charges $10 per month for subscribers to temporarily suspend their contract. You'll have had to be paid up for six months first.

Not just Google Voice
There are other reasons to suspend your phone line; Google Voice just happened to be my spur. Regardless of your scenario or country of residence, if you find you need to give your cell phone a rest but want to avoid losing your number or plan, and skirt a reactivation fee should you change your mind, it's a good idea to check with your carrier's customer service reps to see what they can do for you. It may be more than you thought.

Most Mobile Phone Apps Violate Open Source Rules

Mar 10, 2011 - Seven out of 10 Android and iOS apps that contain open source "failed to comply with basic open source license requirements," according to a new analysis.

OpenLogic, which makes open source software support, scanning and governance tools, said it analyzed 635 mobile applications for Android, iPhone and iPad, out of which 66 contained open source software under the Apache, GPL or LGPL licenses. The vendor found that 71% of the 66 apps violated key obligations required by the open source licenses.

Although the review targeted only 66 open source apps, there are many more such programs running on Android, iPhone and iPad, or at least in the works. Black Duck Software recently examined 3,800 free and open source mobile projects begun in 2010, and found that 55% were geared toward Android and 39% toward Apple's iOS.

FINE PRINT: Intro to Open Source Software Licensing

Complying with open source requirements seems to be a sore spot for mobile developers, if OpenLogic's survey is any indication.

"Many mobile and tablet developers may not have a complete picture of the open source they are using and the requirements of the open source licenses," Kim Weins, senior vice president of products and marketing at OpenLogic, said in the survey announcement. "This has real-world implications. For example, the Free Software Foundation has stated that the GPL and iTunes licenses are not compatible, and Apple has already pulled several apps from the store that were determined to be under the GPL. Google has also received takedown requests for Android market apps that violated the GPL. App developers need to pay attention to open source license compliance to ensure their apps are not impacted by legal actions."

The Android operating system itself is open source, using the Apache license as well as the GPL for Linux components. But Google is being sued by Oracle, which claims Android infringes on Java patents and copyrights. Apple's iOS is proprietary.

OpenLogic's scan of Android and iOS apps found that most of the open source ones violate GPL requirements such as providing source code or an offer to get the source code, or the requirement to provide a copy of the license; most mobile apps using the Apache license violated requirements to provide a copy of the licenses or notices and attributions.

Failure rates were similar on Android and iOS. The Android apps' compliance rate was 27% and iOS was at 32%.

OpenLogic also said that two Android applications contained LGPL Version 2.1, a license which "could have potential conflicts with Apache 2.0, the major license of the Android operating system."

Further, OpenLogic said it "found several apps with extensive EULAs that claimed all of the software included was under their copyright and owned by them - when in fact some of the code in the app was open source."

OpenLogic did not identify any specific apps, but said its selection targeted "top paid and free apps for iPad, iPhone and Android across a variety of categories," including "apps from the top 20 companies in the Fortune 500." Categories included "banking applications, sports and game applications, applications from the world's most recognized brands and media organizations, and popular applications from smaller companies."

Sales of smartphones such as Apple's iPhone4 are set to top 100 million units for the first time this year in the Asia Pacific market -- excluding Japan, an industry analyst said Thursday.

Smartphone sales are projected to hit 137 million units in 2011, up from nearly 84 million last year, the technology industry research company IDC said in a statement.

"Smartphones were a hot item in 2010, with more than double the shipments of 2009," said IDC analyst Melissa Chau, adding that the growth came from the region's more developed markets such as South Korea.

"In 2011, IDC expects this fire to keep burning as mobile phone vendors race to get consumers on higher-margin devices, operators look to pull up revenues on mobile data, and mobile platform stakeholders battle to woo app developers," Chau said.

'Apps' refers to 'applications' that allow smartphone users to do a range of activities through their mobile phones including sharing pictures, playing games or checking their bank accounts.

In addition to operating as a telephone, smartphones allow users to send and receive emails, access Facebook and Twitter accounts, download movies, music and books and perform multiple other functions while on the go.

By 2015, three in five phones sold in the region will be smartphones, up from one in five in 2010, IDC said.

In the face of the smartphones onslaught, feature phones -- or devices that perform the basic functions -- still held their ground.

Sales of feature phones grew 17 percent in 2010, driven by low-end brands priced below $100 from China, India and other countries, IDC said.

Android booms 1600% year-on-year in Europe

10 March, 2011 - Android is seeing some blistering growth figures when it comes to Western Europe, according to figures compiled by IDC.

The company’s European Mobile Phone Tracker shows that the mobile market grew 3.2% year-on-year, but the smartphone market, and Android in turn, showed far more significant growth.

Smartphones represented almost half of all mobiles sold at a figure of 44%, which was double the amount of the fourth quarter in 2009. Feature phones were down 25% compared to the previous year.

Apparently the most advertised and pushed devices were Android handsets from HTC, Sony Ericsson and Samsung, along with the iPhone 4.

Android smartphones actually grew 1,580% year-on-year, shipping 7.9 million units, as opposed to just under half a million only a year ago.

This follows news from Tesco yesterday that Android phones are flying off its shelves. For the first time last month, Android handsets surpassed the sales of the iPhone 4 (when last year, the iPhone 4 had been selling double the amount of Android powered phones).

IDC also had some positive news for Windows Phone 7 – well, positive to an extent. Apparently the new Microsoft OS has witnessed growth of 18% year-on-year, although obviously that doesn’t look so hot when stacked up against Android’s figure.

Francisco Jeronimo, European Mobile Devices Research Manager at IDC, commented: “The last quarter of 2010 clearly shows the trends for the coming years in Western Europe. The Western European mobile phone market will be dominated by smartphones, and Android will be the king of the hill.”

“IDC estimates at that Android will grow at a 37% compound annual growth rate between 2010 and 2015 in Western Europe, overtaking the overall market growth in the period and that of its direct competitor, the iOS from Apple.”

He also noted that the recent Nokia and Microsoft deal would provide opportunities for Android and iOS to increase their user base. When Symbian is left out in the cold, all those current users won’t necessarily be leaping onto Windows Phone 7, or whatever other alternative OS Nokia might be pushing at that time.

Speaking of Nokia, IDC’s statistics did not bring good news for the company. Its market share slipped from 39% to 33% over the course of 2010, a drop driven by a 22% fall in feature phones. The company’s smartphones also underperformed, IDC noted, with the exception of the N8.

Tiny humanoid cell phone adds personal touch to cold phone convos

Japanese researchers have developed a human-shaped mobile phone with a skin-like casing to make people feel closer to the person they’re talking to. Weird!

The prototype humanoid cell phone is the "brain child" of researchers at Osaka University and mobile operator NTT DoCoMo.

The little human phone boasts a speaker in its head and a LED in its chest that turns blue when the phone is in use and red when it is in standby."The mobile phone may feel like the person you are talking to," the Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International (ATR) explained in a press release, describing the gadget as a "revolutionary telecom medium."

The prototype is approximately the size of a palm and has an outer coating that feels like human skin.

If that’s not creepy enough, the developers are planning to put the phone into commercial production within five years.

The long term goal is to add image and voice recognition capabilities so the little humanoid cell phone can actually understand what you’re saying and dial the appropriate person.

All this to make you feel closer to the people you’re speaking to. But can you imagine pulling a little humanoid doll cell phone out of your purse on the bus? The looks you’d get…

The androgynous design could be mistaken for a female or a male, but hardly anyone will suspect it’s a phone.

Spy fears after Far East firm with alleged links to Chinese military

Security experts have voiced concern after Business Secretary Vince Cable backed a giant Chinese company that is bidding to build a mobile phone network on the London Underground.

The deal between telecoms giant Huawei – accused of having links with the Chinese military – and London Underground is set to be cleared by Ministers.

It would mean passengers could use mobiles on the Tube by the time of the 2012 Olympic Games.

But cyber and telecom experts warned Huawei represented a potential spying threat and claim the equipment installed could be used to hack into mobile calls or even shut off telephone exchanges.

US officials have already claimed that the company could jeopardise national security.
They also raised concerns over the founder of the company, Ren Zhenfei, a former member of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army.

The technology that Huawei sells is used by telecoms networks all over the world, including in India and the Middle East.

The company has annual revenues of about £14 billion and employs 100,000 people worldwide. The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills said Mr Cable had not raised any objections to the deal.

Motorola Cliq 2 Review (T-Mobile)

The Motorola Cliq 2 ($99.99) may not be the most advanced phone on the market, but a week of hands-on review proved it to be a solid phone at a very compelling price. And though I'm not a fan of physical keyboards on phones, the Motorola Cliq 2's raised buttons provide one of the best typing experiences I've had outside of BlackBerry.

The closest competitor to the Motorola Cliq 2 on T-Mobile is the HTC MyTouch 3G Slide (also $99), which was a great phone when it was released last July, but the Cliq 2 offers a far better package.

Otherwise, you have to step all the up to the HTC G2 ($249), which gets you a better display, 4G speed and HD video, but at a much steeper price. The Cliq 2 is definitely the one to buy for T-Mobile keyboard fans who don't want to spend a bundle.
How it feels in the hand

The Motorola Cliq 2 is a solidly built phone, with a textured, rubberized back that feels comfortable and secure in your hand. At 4.3" x 2.3" x .5", it's almost identical in size to the MyTouch 3G and fits very well in the hand.

At 6.2 ounces, the Motorola Cliq 2 is roughly the same weight as other keyboard sliders, but more than an ounce heavier than models without a keyboard, such as the HTC MyTouch 4G. So consider whether a keyboard is really a necessity for you.

Overall build quality is high and the slide-out keyboard feels solid and operates smoothly.
Display and sound

The display on the Motorola Cliq 2 is a slightly small (compared to other Android phones) 3.7-inch 854x480 LCD touchscreen, but display quality was crisp and clear with nice contrast. Not up to the quality of the Super AMOLED displays of the Samsung Galaxy S line, but perfectly acceptable.

Sound from the built-in speaker was pretty good for a cell phone, but don't look for it to power your beach party.
Making calls

Like other T-Mobile phones I've tested, the Motorola Cliq 2 delivered very good call quality in New York City. So if you're in a location with strong T-Mobile coverage, you should expect the same.

The Cliq 2 also offers Wi-Fi mobile calling, which allows you to make and receive calls over Wi-Fi. The calls still go against your plan minutes, but it can be a lifesaver in areas with no network coverage (as it was for me last week on a ski trip in rural Massachusetts).
Web browsing & mobile hotspot

The Motorola Cliq 2 is, unfortunately, "only" a 3G phone. Nonetheless, it regularly delivered excellent download speeds of around 2Mbps, peaking as high as 2.9Mbps. Those results are nearly the same as my tests with the MyTouch 4G and Samsung's newest Galaxy S 4G (though the Samsung peaked as high as 6.5Mbps). Proving that real world conditions often still trump 4G technology.

The Cliq 2 runs Android 2.2 and will support Flash.

The Motorola Cliq 2 can act as a mobile hotspot for up to five devices. As on any Android device, it's easy to set up. Check T-Mobile for additional fees with your plan.

Camera and video recording

The Motorola Cliq 2 has a 5MP camera with an LED flash and can shoot 480p video. Camera quality was decent, though somewhat washed-out and noisy in low-light conditions. Video quality was only fair. Controls are basic, but easy to use.

Keyboard and navigation

Though I am not a fan of physical keyboards on phones, I still have a soft-spot in my heart from back in my days typing away on a BlackBerry. The Motorola Cliq 2 is one of the only keyboards from a manufacturer other than BlackBerry that I've actually enjoyed using. It has raised, well-spaced keys that make it easy to distinguish letters while typing. On the downside, the keys are a little stiff and it would have been nice if there were some additional shortcuts, such as a ".com" key.

Motorola also included Swype on the Cliq 2 for super-fast on-screen typing.

The Motorola Cliq 2 uses Motorola's Motoblur overlay on Android. Annoyingly, you are required to create a separate Motoblur account when setting up your phone, which becomes just one more id and password to remember.

The Cliq 2 has a 1GHz processor (significantly faster than the 528MHz processor on the previous Cliq). Overall navigation speed and app performance was fine, though there were occasional stutters.

Storage

The Cliq 2 comes with a 2GB microSD card, expandable up to 32GB.

Battery life

The Motorola Cliq 2 battery life was as good as or better than most other smartphones I've used recently. It easily lasted me through the day under normal usage. Official talk time is 7.9 hours, with standby time of 13 days.

Pricing and availability

The Motorola Cliq 2 is available through T-Mobile for $99.99 with a new, two-year customer agreement. You can also pick it up for FREE on Wirefly.com or $19.99 on AmazonWireless— that's a pretty good price.

Should you buy it?

As I've said, I'm not a fan of physical keyboards. But if you are, this would be the one I would get on T-Mobile.

The U.S. Smartphone Revolution

A lot of new and interesting factoids appeared today regarding the battle between the smartphone operating systems. At this juncture, it appears as if the Google Android OS is beginning to move ahead of the competition while RIM has actually maintained pace with the Apple iPhone. Microsoft Phone 7 and Symbian are in the back of the pack. Way in the back. This is appropriate, since Nokia will be swapping Symbian for Windows Phone 7.

In older columns, I predicted that the scene will boil down to two players: probably Android and Apple. But I'm not surprised that the Blackberry hangs tough. Users love that phone.

Overlooked in the commotion, though, is the transformative nature of the entire market. The whole world is looking at these changes. Wherever you go, the hip, trendy phone users around the globe will most often be seen with one of these North American smartphones. And to be honest the hippest of the hip will have an iPhone.

I find this particularly amusing, because I recall a constant barrage of anti-American accusations during the late 1990s, whereby we were told that the mobile phone world has passed us by. When I was doing Silicon Spin, a cable show for TechTV, guests would often arrive having just visited Japan, carrying some dingbat phone, such as the Docomo, and singing its praises.

Whenever you read International tech media, you'd hear about all the great things going on with mobile technology everywhere in the world, except in the U.S.

You'd go to meetings and conferences and hear speakers lament about how the U.S. was so far behind in mobile phone technology. The common accusation was that we were pathetic laggards. Losers. This mocking and teasing continued right up until the announcement of the iPhone. Then everything changed.

The fact is we were never really that far behind, and most of the "great" phones around the world were gimmicky and often just plain dumb. The Docomo comes to mind. The first time I saw one its earmark seemed to be a lot of animated gifs for icons. All that was missing was the cat running back and forth at the bottom of the display.

Whatever the case, I can assure you that it was a little more than annoying to listen to what seemed like the entire universe deriding Americans about cell phones—a technology we invented. We were the redhead stepchild of the tech world because our phones were not doing much more than making phone calls. How lame is that? Thus, we were world class losers.

Gee, I guess that's changed, eh? If you aren't using an iPhone in London, then you are probably using an Android phone. That's unless you are a loser, laggard, or slow-poke.

This particular leapfrog is because of American ingenuity and was led by the folks at Apple. It's kind of been overlooked, however, in all the confusion and classic fighting for market share. Most people seem to have forgotten the history and don't even realize that they witnessed one of the great tech come-from-behind victories ever.

To be honest about it, it even surprised me. It was like a sporting event where one whole team was replaced with another team to "show them how it's done." The new guys then decimate the competition.

It's expected that within just a few years the entire market will consist of varieties of smartphones, whose designs and operation were all invented in the U.S. and Canada. And we won't have to gloat about it.

Docomo, hah! Well, maybe gloat a little.

Mobile phone games getting highly addictive, says ISG

Forget those PS and Xbox consoles when mobile phones are the new weapons of choice for those who can’t do without some gaming action while on the move. According to an Information Solutions Group (ISG) study revealed by PopCap Games, one third of U.S. and U.K. adults claim to be mobile phone gamers. The number of people resorting to gaming on the handset has apparently crossed that of PC and console gaming buffs.

73% of the U.K. respondents confess to having played a mobile phone game in the past as pitted against 44% of their U.S. counterparts. The 33.6% of participants who played a game on their phones in the month preceding the study qualified as ‘mobile phone gamers’. 24.6% were grouped into the ‘avid mobile phone gamers’ bracket for having played a title in the week before ISG’s survey.

“Mobile games are, along with social games, the hottest sector of the video game industry by far,” remarked Dennis Ryan, EVP of Worldwide Publishing at PopCap. “As more people purchase smartphones and the entire process of finding, purchasing and playing mobile games becomes as simple as browsing the internet, the mobile games market is going to accelerate even more.”

97% of avid mobile phone gamers and 84% of all mobile phone gamers play on their mobile devices at least once in several days. 92% of handset gamers who use a smartphone are cited to play on these gadgets once a week. Interestingly, 44% of mobile phone gamers voted for their phones as opposed to the 21% and 30% who chose video game consoles and PCs, respectively, as the most used gaming-capable gizmo for playing on.

And we hear the coins chinking for companies like PopCap who develop titles for this platform as people shell out cold hard cash to support the addiction. 43% of mobile gamers and 49% of smartphone owners have upgraded a free trial game to the paid version in the past year. The regular smartphone user bought almost twice as many games as people with normal handsets and even spent an extra $10 on this sort of entertainment.

This international ISG survey was conducted between the January 25 to 31, 2011 timeline. It takes into account 2,425 online surveys submitted by U.S. and U.K. members of the Toluna ePanel.

Samsung Mobile's Galaxy S, Galaxy Pop

Refurbished Cell Phones Get a Little Smarter

When AT&T recently offered refurbished 8-gigabyte iPhone 3Gs for $99, news of the deal eclipsed another major iPhone announcement, that Wal-Mart is now stocking the hottest smartphone in America.

If you can get a refurbished iPhone for $99, are good deals in the offing for other popular smartphones, like the BlackBerry Storm and the Google G1?

They may be if enough consumers decide to return their multi-functional gizmos within 30 days, making those phones eligible to be refurbished and re-sold by wireless carriers.

“As more and more phones become smartphones, more capable and more feature-rich, we’re likely to see the number of refurbished phones going up because of returns,” said Kevin Burden, ABI Research’s mobile devices research director. “Some phones may not meet the expectations of buyers, who see them as too complex.”

Smartphones, so-named because of their ability to handle e-mail, Web browsing and some computer-like functions, are one of the hottest segments in the cell phone market, propelled in part by devices such as the iPhone and Research In Motion’s line of BlackBerrys.

But the complicated bits of communications gadgetry are not for everyone, said Burden. “We’ve talked to plenty in the industry who say, ‘We sell (some) people a snappy smartphone, and they come back a couple weeks later and say they don’t get it, it’s too confusing. They want a phone where they can make a phone call, do text messaging and maybe have something to hold their calendars.’ ”

Touchscreen phones, in general, are still new to many users, who may think they want such phones, but find themselves longing for physical buttons to press, be it a phone keypad or QWERTY keyboard, once they get the phones home.

“What I have seen with touchscreens is that they tend to polarize people,” Burden said. “Some people absolutely love them; others absolutely hate them. But if a phone is returned, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not working right or working the way it’s supposed to; it’s just not meeting the expectations of those particular users.”

Appeal in a down economy

The $99 iPhone, available only online, was a “promotion” for the last two weeks of December, along with $199 pricing for the 16GB iPhone, according to AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel. Both phones were priced at $100 less than the retail cost with a two-year data and voice contract. As of Jan. 1, refurbished iPhone prices were back up, with 8GB iPhones shown on AT&T’s site for $149, and the 16GB model at $249.

Given the current economy, refurbished phones — especially high-demand models such as the iPhone — may have more appeal to cash-strapped buyers.

“I think what you sometimes see in tough times is a flight to quality,” said Siegel. “And the iPhone’s a great example of that. If we can put refurbished iPhones into the hands of folks for just $99 and they get the benefits of this great device, all the better.”

Siegel declined to say whether AT&T will offer another round of discounted refurbished iPhones, which come with a warranty of “90 days or more,” according to the company. New phones usually come with a one-year warranty.

AT&T, which sells other refurbished phones, including models of the BlackBerry Curve and Pearl, as well as Palm Centro, notes on its site that “refurbished phones are previously owned devices that have been unused or lightly used and returned during the 30-day trial period.”

Each phone, the company says, is “independently quality tested and loaded with the latest software to meet current factory standards.”

Part of the iPhone’s appeal is its sleek design, encased in black or white plastic, with a large 3.5-inch touchscreen. AT&T notes that “some refurbished iPhone 3G devices will have minor scratches,” which could be a deal-killer for those who want to start their relationship with the phone scratch-free.

Always check the warranty

Refurbished phones are also available via the Web through independent retailers. Carriers sometimes also sell them to customers who opt for pre-paid, or pay-as-you-go, phone services.

The major wireless carriers vary when it comes to selling refurbished phones to customers for contract plans. Sprint and Verizon Wireless do not, as of now. T-Mobile sells some refurbished phones (no G1s, or Android phones, yet), and AT&T has the broadest selection available.

The disincentive for carriers is the price; refurbished phones can sell for up to 60 percent less than retail price.

Checking what kind of warranty is offered on a refurbished phone is important. Ninety days is considered good and should be enough time for you to learn if there are any problems with the phone; anything less may not be so reassuring.

T-Mobile says its refurbished phones are under warranty “from either 90 days of receipt or the remainder of your 12-month service agreement, whichever is longer.”

'Double-edged sword'

“Buying a refurbished smartphone is a double-edged sword,” said Adam M. Fendelman, who reports on cell phones for About.com’s cell phones guide.

“On one hand, they tend to be more expensive than cell phones and the definition of refurbished is that you're buying for less. On the other, you get what you pay for and you're opening a can of worms for potentially more problems than buying new.”

Fendelman recommends buyers compare the cost savings they might get by going with a refurbished smartphone to the cost of a new one “to gauge whether that's worth potential hassles down the road. If your refurbished price is 10 percent off, that may not be worth it for you. If you're being offered 30 percent off, though, that may be the golden number.”

He also advises buyers to ask wireless carriers and vendors if they will guarantee that the refurbished smartphone they’re buying “isn’t dead on arrival.” Buyers should also ask why the phone was returned in the first place and if it was restored to factory specifications.

Still a small percentage of market

New phones that are returned to wireless carriers and wind up being sold as refurbished are supposed to be “reflashed,” meaning all the data previously on the device is wiped clean, and the phone’s software is restored to factory settings.

For now, refurbished phones remain a relatively small percentage of the worldwide cell phone market, said Burden of ABI Research.

In 2008, with about 1.2 billion handsets shipped worldwide, 40.7 million of those were refurbished phones. It’s a number he expects will increase this year to perhaps 46 million.

ReCellular Inc., which sells both refurbished and recycled phones to businesses worldwide, says that the “average American replaces their cell phone every 18 months.”

Three years ago, ultra-compact phones, like Motorola’s early generation of RAZRs, and “entry-level” camera phones were among the popular consumer choices. “Today, those phones are being retired in large quantities as consumers are moving toward newer technologies, especially smartphones and multimedia-enabled handsets,” said Chuck Newman, company CEO, in a statement.

Based on that trend, the company said it “expects the best-selling models of today — such as the Apple iPhone and BlackBerry Curve — to appear on the list of top recycled models in 2009 or 2010.”

Quality cell phone signal amplifiers tend to be more expensive than most phones, but the cost might just be worth it really need the enhanced coverage. If you live in a city, you probably don't need one, but if you reside in a rural area then you should at least consider the option. Wilson Electronics offers some of the best options that we've reviewed, but the CW2000-WL from Cellphone-Mate is a solid choice as well.

The CW2000-WL's design is similar to the Amplifier Cradle Kit from Wilson Electronics. It consists of four main parts: the main amplifier, a power cable, an external antenna for catching the cell phone signal, and an internal antenna for transferring the signal to your phone. It supports CDMA, TDMA, GSM, and AMPS networks, but it will not support Nextel's iDEN.

The amplifier measures 4.3 inches by 4.5 inches by 1 inch and weighs 9.4 ounces. Its silver metal casing gives it a solid feel in the hand and an industrial look. Like with the Wilson product, the CW2000-WL is easy to set up, but the finished arrangement can be bit clunky. First, you must find a place for the amplifier box. If you're in a car, we recommend stashing it under one of the front seats. Otherwise, if you're at home you can put it almost anywhere.

The CW2000-WL's outside antenna measures six inches and is composed of a sturdy but flexible metal. It has a strong magnetic base so it should stay it place on your car's roof even at high speeds. You'll need to run the connecting cable through the car door or window and attach it to the amplifier box. The wire stretches an ample 10 feet, but keep in mind that it can be a tricky process to thread the wire into your car or home while keeping it out of the away.

We also found it rather difficult to place the outside antenna in just the right spot. According to the CW2000-WL's user manual, it is only for outside use and it must be at least one foot clear of other antennas. What's more, a rather ominous "Warning" clause in the manual advises that the antenna should be placed at least three feet from any vehicle occupants. Depending on the size of your car, it may be difficult to follow all of the advisories to the letter.

The internal antenna also comes with its own set of rules. It should be placed at least five feet from the external antenna, at least four inches from any metal surface, and at least 10 inches from any person. Here again, just the right spot may not exist if you have a small car. The internal antenna is plastic and measures 4.5 inches. You can secure its adhesive back to a variety of surfaces, but we wouldn't recommend attaching it to glass. The cord connecting it to the amplifier box also measures 10 feet.

The final step in the CW2000-WL's set-up process is to plug in the amplifier using the included cigarette light or AC adapter. Both come with relatively long cables. Once you're ready to go, just flip the amplifier's power switch on the left side. An indicator light will tell you when it's ready to go.

We tested the CW2000-WL with a Nokia 5300 Xpress Music, an Apple iPhone 3G, and a Samsung Instinct. With each model we saw an improvement in signal strength, particularly when in an area of San Francisco that has poor reception for all carriers. We did see a reduction in dropped calls, less static, and smoother connection. The improvement to each phone was about the same, though the Instinct had an extra bar at times.

Keep in mind, however, that a stronger signal and better voice quality are two different things. Though the CW2000-WL promises to improve both, voice quality continues to be variable. True, we never lost a connection when using the amplifier, but voices on all phones still sounded a bit distorted and the volume was rather soft. Even so, the CW2000-WL makes a change for the better.

Nokia is the world's largest handset maker, but it holds less than 1% of the Japanese market. In order to address this, the cell phone manufacturing giant is planning to launch its own wireless phone service in the country, according to a report in the Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun.

The company will reportedly lease network time and bandwidth from Japanese wireless carrier NTT DoCoMo and become a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO). In order to develop a strong brand, Nokia is expected to debut the service with high-end handsets.

Japan may be a tough market to crack, as it is full of strong homegrown competitors like Matsushita, NEC, and Sharp. Japan is widely considered the most advanced handset market, as customers are accustomed to being able to use their mobile phones to pay for products, read comics, watch television, and other services.

Additionally, the recent history of MVNOs isn't very promising. In the United States, a slew of MVNOs targeting specific demographics have been introduced and failed in the last few years. Small companies like Amp'd and Voce may have been doomed from the start, but even companies with high brand awareness like ESPN failed in the cell phone service business. Virgin Mobile has been a success with its low-cost service though, and it recently purchased defunct MVNO Helio for $39 million.

If Nokia does launch a wireless service, it will be the latest example of the company expanding beyond just making cell phones. CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo told InformationWeek the company is branching out to offer additional services such as multimedia, navigation, and gaming in order to draw more customers to Nokia handsets.
